BOTULINUM TOXIN AND GUMBY SMILE: A TREATMENT APPROACH

O sorriso é elemento central da expressão facial e está diretamente implicado na autoestima e bem‐estar do indivíduo. O chamado “sorriso gengival” — caracterizado pela exposição excessiva da gengiva ao sorrir — pode comprometer a harmonia estética do sorriso e levar a insatisfação do paciente. Dentre as diversas causas identificadas (hiperatividade do lábio superior, crescimento vertical excessivo da maxila, extrusão dento‐alveolar, entre outras), destaca‐se a hiperatividade do músculo elevador do lábio superior como alvo terapêutico para abordagens minimamente invasivas. A utilização da toxina botulínica tipo A (TXB‑A) emergiu como alternativa no tratamento do sorriso gengival, especialmente em casos em que predomina a componente muscular. Esta revisão e reflexão abordam a aplicação da toxina botulínica para correção do sorriso gengival, com discussão sobre eficácia, duração do efeito, vantagens e limitações, apoiadas em evidências científicas recentes. Conclui‐se que a TXB‑A representa opção terapêutica válida, segura e bem tolerada, desde que criteriosamente indicada, embora deva ser entendida como tratamento temporário e/ou como coadjuvante de outras intervenções.
